The new workplace for China Merchants Bank supports future business expansion while reinforcing cultural identity.

The space combines traditional features, robust infrastructure, and a refined aesthetic tailored to the London market.

Establishing a Strategic Presence in London

China Merchants Bank’s move to 20 Fenchurch Street, also known as the ‘Walkie-Talkie building’, marked a significant step in the company’s UK expansion strategy. The new 9,000 sqft office provides room for future growth while increasing the bank’s visibility in London’s financial district.

A key feature of the design is an authentic ‘Chinese-wall’ in the client suite, reflecting the bank’s cultural heritage. To deliver this, heavy stone was sourced and installed on-site. Structural engineers were engaged to assess the load, and the floor slab was reinforced in line with their recommendations. Coordination with building management ensured all necessary approvals and compliance requirements were met.

A Refined, London-Specific Expression

While the design remains consistent with China Merchants Bank’s global brand standards, the finishes palette was tailored to suit the London context. Rich materials, layered textures, and a muted colour palette bring a quiet warmth to the space.  Traditional elements are paired with contemporary detailing, including clean lines, soft lighting, and precise joinery, creating a calm, refined environment. The result is a professional and timeless workplace that supports the bank’s growth while honouring its cultural roots.

Planning for Growth, Function, & Security

The layout was planned to support both daily operations and long-term growth. It includes a formal client suite with reception and meeting rooms, a staff breakout area, and a dedicated data centre. The space balances privacy, operational efficiency, and a welcoming front-of-house experience.

The data centre was a critical component of the project, supporting secure global communication and underpinning the bank’s broader digital infrastructure. Integrated as part of the overall workplace planning, it was delivered in close coordination with specialist consultants to ensure performance, security, and compliance. As a high-spec, on-site facility, it was designed to handle sensitive financial data and provide uninterrupted access to core systems across time zones. Technical infrastructure was built for resilience, scalability, and long-term reliability.
